Raina's piano recital, 3/17/2012

Its a rehash of the rehearsal video from last week :-)  but that did not deter daddy. And she is better dressed than last week, albeit a brief skirmish with mommy over girlie clothes. The pieces are:

  1. Chopin: Waltz in A Minor
  2. Beethoven: Fur Elise
  3. Burgmuller: L'Hirondelle

The story of the battle of wills (mommy:girlie girl vs. Raina:tomboy) over getting dressed is more interesting, but I don't think I will get permission to disclose it.  I will admit that Raina doing cartwheels in that dress in the concert hall was kind of incongruous.

Mountain Lions in the Neighborhood

When we moved here, we had heard from our neighbor about occasional mountain lion sighting in this region way back when. We heard about a few sightings in the Menlo Park / Los Altos area over the last couple of years. A few weeks back, one had to be shot in Berkeley. Coincidentally, right next to Chez Panisse in the area known at the Gourmet Ghetto. That one must have developed a taste for fine cuisine! Yesterday a mountain lion left the remains of a deer in the neighborhood school yard. The California mountain lion population must be making a comeback.

"Belmont police are alerting neighbors to a mountain lion attack that occurred sometime on Wednesday night. A deer carcass turned up just behind Ralston Middle School, off of Ralston Road. San Mateo County has seen an increase in cougar sightings this year...

In fact, there were two, a female and its cub that killed a deer grazing on the field behind Ralston Middle School. The carcass was discovered Thursday morning...

Wherever deer are found, mountain lions generally will follow."

We have deer by the masses in our neighborhood, and they are always to be found under our deck in the summer. Let's see if a mountain lion strolls up to our deck one of these days. We will probably have to think twice about leaving the doors to the deck open at night next summer.

Raina & Taylor Swift

I had to post this fascinating conversation I had with Raina just now:

Raina: Who is Taylor Swift's boyfriend?
Me: I don't know
R: Didn't you say it is Joe Jonas? <ouch -- this kid knows too much gossip>
Me: That was some time back
R: Not now? Is he dead?
Me: No
R: OK -- that's good. So did they break up? <eye-opener #1. She is getting wise>
Me: Probably
R: Why did they break up?
Me: I don't know
R: Check on the internet <huh?>

That's shocking for me. How does a 6-yr old who can't even spell 'our' know that an internet search will likely turn up such dirt?

After some checking on the internet, we found no answer to this burning question. Very dissatisfied with the internet, Raina goes:
May be he found another girl? <huh? again> I need to ask Natashe. She knows everything about Taylor Swift.

BTW Natashe is another 6-yr old kid in her class.
